2012 Corporate Compliance Conference

NEARLY 200 ATTEND 2012 CORPORATE COMPLIANCE CONFERENCE

More than 180 people attended the fifth annual CP of NYS and NYSARC Corporate Compliance Conference May 8 at the Marriott Hotel in Albany. The event was sponsored by O’Connell and Aronowitz, Hiscock Barclay and Manatt, Phelps and Phillips.

James Cox, the New York State Medicaid Inspector General gave the keynote address.  He explained the Office of the Medicaid Inspector General’s (OMIG) mission statement and then discussed his plans to place an emphasis on audits and on fighting fraud amongst Medicaid providers.  Mr. Cox also pledged to work in partnership with providers.  Mr. Cox introduced “The New OMIG” describing changes that have been made to the office.  Business Line Teams now address the work of the OMIG.  In his remarks Mr. Cox also addressed the new environment of managed care and how it will impact compliance.

Our second speaker was Richard Landeau from the labor firm, Jackson Lewis.  His presentation, Old World and New World Issues in the Workplace, addressed compliance and labor issues.  He spoke to increasing Department of Labor audits of employers.  His presentation gave the conference attendees advice on how to handle issues in the workplace.

Robert Hussar began the afternoon session with a presentation on Whistleblowers.  He joked that this presentation will not teach you to be a whistleblower.  Mr. Hussar reviewed the federal and state False Claims provisions and how they may impact an organization with their penalties and fines.  He also reviewed how a whistleblower moves through the judicial process.  In addition he shared how to manage whistleblowers in your organization.

Melissa Zambri, a partner with the law firm Hiscock and Barclay closed the conference with a session addressing Governing Board Issues and Responsibilities.  The emphasis was on how the role of a Board member has changed significantly with the times.  Board members carry much more responsibility and authority which means they also carry more liability.
