We apologize for all the recent communications on power mobility devices (PMD) but things are changing often and we want to keep all informed.  I have attached the most recent PMD Product Classifications List (released this past Wed) and Update from Pride Mobility on a recent meeting with Secretary Leavitt.  Below are copies of two articles released this week from CMS:

Power Mobility Devices – Revised Coding Guidelines

The definitions of Multiple Power Options power wheelchairs (K0841-K0843, K0861-K0864, K0884-K0886, and K0891) in the Power Mobility Devices Policy Article are being revised. Currently the definitions say that the codes include an expandable controller. The definitions are being changed to say that a non-expandable controller is standard but that it can be upgraded to an expandable controller. This change is effective for claims with dates of service on or after November 15, 2006.

For dates of service from 11/15/06 to 12/31/06, code E2399 (not otherwise classified interface, includes all related electronics and any type mounting hardware) would be used to bill for an upgrade to an expandable controller. A new code, E2377, has been established for claims with dates of service on or after January 1, 2007.

E2377 Power wheelchair accessory, expandable controller, including all related electronics and mounting hardware, upgrade provided at initial issue

These changes will be incorporated in a future revision of the Power Mobility Devices and Wheelchair Options and Accessories Policy Articles.

Wheelchair Options and Accessories – Policy Article – Coding Guidelines

Code E2399 (not otherwise classified interface) is appropriately used at the time of initial issue in the following situations:

1. A mini-proportional, compact, or short throw joystick is provided, regardless of whether it is used for hand or chin control or
2. An expandable controller is provided for a power wheelchair described by code K0848-K0860 or K0868-K0880 or
3. A touchpad is provided as the drive control interface or
4. There is no specific E code which describes the type of drive control interface system which is provided.

Code E2399 (not otherwise classified interface) is appropriately used at the time of replacement in the following situations:

1. An integrated proportional joystick and controller box are being replaced due to damage; or
2. The item being replaced is a remote joystick box only (without the controller); or
3. The item being replaced is another type of interface, e.g. sip and puff, head control (without the controller); or
4. The item being replaced is the controller box only (without the remote joystick or other type of interface); or
5. There is no specific E code which describes the type of drive control interface system which is provided.

Please note new e-mail address for replacement in your address book:  [email protected].  Thank you.
