Following is updated information regarding DME:

  • NYS DOH has announced a shift in the approval process for manual wheelchairs and accessories to the DVS (direct verification process). Effective June 1, 2007, these items will no longer be subject to the prior approval process. Because of concerns regarding the clarity of coverage criteria for certain items, DOH has issued revisions to the Wheeled Mobility Guidelines specific to ultra-light wheelchairs, tilt-in-space wheelchairs and the fully reclining back. The list of items now being processed via DVS and the guideline revisions are attached for your review.
  • On May 30, DOH hosted a meeting in Buffalo to share plans to reform the DME prior approval process (information previously forwarded to all Affiliates and discussed by conference call). Additional meetings are being planned in NYC, the Capital Region and in Syracuse and will probably be scheduled in August. More details to follow shortly.
  • There are a number of bills of interest in Congress dealing with DME, including removal of the “in home” requirement for Medicare, modifications to the “competitive bidding” requirement and a “carve-out” from competitive bidding for complex rehab equipment. Attached is a summary of these bills, courtesy of NY Medical Equipment Providers (NYMEP).
