Statewide Advocacy - October Statewide Trend Blitz to Governor - SAMPLE LETTER FOR FAMILIES

Honorable David A. Paterson
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224

Dear Governor Paterson:

I am a parent (or family member) of a person with a developmental disability and am writing to implore you to include a trend factor in your FY 2010-11 budget request for OMRDD. I also want to urge you to provide funding to develop new out-of-home placements for individuals with developmental disabilities.

My family member is critically dependant on services provided by not-for-profit agencies funded through the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities (OMRDD).

Direct support professionals make these services possible by providing my family member with hands on care. Unfortunately, their salaries are dangerously low and it is increasingly difficult to recruit and retain qualified direct support employees. For the last 25 years, a trend factor has enabled our providers to give these staff modest yearly cost of living increases. But the last budget contained no trend. As expenses rise, it becomes impossible to pay them anything resembling the salary they deserve.

Further, there are growing waiting lists of individuals who can no longer be cared for at home. These individuals will need out of home placements.  Unfortunately, the funding currently available for new residences is woefully inadequate.  Additional resources are needed in your Executive Budget for 2010-11.

Again Governor, I implore you to include a trend factor for voluntary providers funded through OMRDD in your budget request to the Legislature, as well as additional funding for out-of-home development in your Executive Budget for 2010-11.

Sincerely,

Street Address
